Kian Culham was runner up in the Young Community Volunteer of the Year award. This is for his ongoing volunteering with the club as well as at school with athletics and football events. It was a superb evening, held at Chelmsford City Racecourse, with Kian's highlight being able to meet Olympic Gold medallists Saskia Clark and Max Whitlock! Well done Kian!

Dylan Robins at the Pentathlon GB British Modern Biathlon Championships
Running for Elm Green School, club member Dylan Robins competed at Solhull on 26th November 2016, having qualified at the Eastern regional event in Watford back in September where he finished first. In the morning he had a great swim taking a second off his PB, putting him in 12th place. The run event took place in the afternoon, and having been put in the fastest heat he was up against some tough competition and found himself in the unusual position of being boxed in. After a little wobble he picked it up again and managed to gain places to push his combined event score up and finished in 10th place out of a very strong field of 55 finalists.
Full results here. It was all very close with only 15 points between 5th and 10th place, ie 1 sec on the run!! He's got the National schools Biathlon coming up in March which is an 800m run again, so he will be working towards that now. Picture in Gallery.

Club members qualify for the England Championships
Brilliant to see seven from Tony and Craig's training group qualify for the England champs, so far. On w/e of 27th November 2016, Sky Fay, Hannah Smith and Melissa Gurteen joined Amber, Lois, Leah and Eve to qualify for this prestigious event. It's expected more will follow, so we will have our best ever turnout at Sheffield.

England Athletics working with MIND to promote Mental Wellbeing through running
Their aim is to bring down the stigma associated with mental health issues by getting people to run & talk about it. Josie Sheffield (Club coach and England Athletics Mental Health Ambassador) sends a massive "thank you" to Claire for her help & to all those athletes that supported our 1 mile run for World Mental Health Day on Thursday 13th October 2016. It was great to see so many of you take part by either running, jogging or walking 4 laps of the track, and in doing so, helping to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Well done to all 40 athletes who achieved this great level of performance.

Essex Championships Results, 14-15th May 2016
Under 15 girl Eve Wright took her first ever County Championship Gold at the Essex Champs at Chelmsford.  Wright in only her second year competing was the fastest qualifier from the semi-final and in a close final, ducked for the line to take gold in a new pb of 12.42 seconds, taking her to 4th in the UK rankings.
The girls continued their fine early season form and took a total of 9 county medals with Kiera Hornsby claiming double gold in the unusual combination of 3k and Triple Jump.  U17 Daisy Partridge made it three years on the trot as Javelin gold medalist with a great set of throws, the longest going out to 33.70m top the podium again.  Senior lady Chloe Cockell added a gold in Hammer to her tally of medals through the junior ranks and Melissa Gurteen leapt to a new pb of 9.74m taking silver in the U17 Triple Jump.  12 year old Rachel Carter took an excellent silver medal in the Hurdles and Megan Larkins took Silver in the Discus with 29.31m and 41.92m in the Hammer.

The male team members also faired well with Senior Man Charlie Singleton taking two medals, gold in Long Jump with a leap of 6.15m and Triple Jump bronze with 12.57m.  First year U17 Conor Page took his excellent winter cross country form to the track taking bronze in the 3k, with fellow U17 Sam Larkins throwing the Hammer to 27.66m to claim silver.  Finally Veteran Amr Ziko, took the 100m silver medal in a time of 11.93.
Once again the local club were among the most successful clubs in the county with many of the athletes set to be selected to represent Essex.

Barry Plowman at the Groundhog Track Marathon, Telford, 5th March 2016
Barry completed this marathon at a very cold Telford, finishing 7th out of 79 in 3:24:08, the first time he has done a whole race in gloves! Picture in Gallery of the first lap of 105.5 and Barry at the finish with his medal. Refuelling consisted of a banana every half hour and water. He is now on Insulin for diabetes and told to keep off all sugar/energy drinks and gels. He plans to return to the road next time which will be the Abingdon Marathon in October.

Six compete at the English Championships: Sheffield 13th & 14th February 2016
The England Championship is the highest level of competition possible for our athletes and it was tremendous to see the red and yellow of BDAC present at the indoor championship at Sheffield. Qualifying standards are exceptionally high so making the champs is a huge achievement.
U17 man Ryan Morgan got us underway with a fabulous performance in the triple jump. Ryan is the East of England and Essex Champion and lept to an impressive 12.72m coming 6th in the country, an outstanding achievement.
Leah Duncan, in her first year of the age group, had a busy weekend running 5 races. She smashed her PB in the 60m running 7.94 in the heat and then winning her semi final in 7.90.
In a final in which everyone had run under 8 seconds, it was a blanket finish and Leah came an outstanding 5th in England. She followed this up with a 6th place in the country in the 200m and again ran a pb of 26.02 seconds.
U15 boy Freddie Martin started concentrating on sprints only last year and did amazing to reach the championship. He has had a foot injury for the past few weeks and recovered just in time to once again run under 8 seconds just missing his pb but ran great to bag a quick 7.95 seconds.
U15G 60m hurdles club record holder Hannah Smith, beat her pb and club record running 9.77 to make it through the heats into the semi final; an excellent achievement. Hannah missed out on making the final but already looks set to compete at this level for sometime.
U20 man Lewis Thorn, a regular at this level, doubled up in the 60m and 200m running his second fastest ever indoors despite missing some winter training with an injury.
Finally, Ben Slayman making his debut at the English Championship, had the mis-fortune to injury himself in his warm up and despite trying to run through it, had to pull up in the 60m.
*** Well done to all six athletes. If current predictions come true we predict 10-15 making the entry standards next year and that could make us one of the best represented clubs at the championship - how amazing would that be!

Eastern and Essex Championships, 20 medals and many PBs, w/e 7th February 2016
It was another superb championship at Lee Valley with club members taking a total of 22 medals. There were PBs all-round and a number of first timers at the fantastic indoor track. Given the performances, a number of our athletes are on to have a great outdoor season. What was also pleasing was just the sheer number of BDAC athletes taking part and having fun together as a team. Congratulations to our medalists and everyone who took part. Pictures in Gallery.
