Mersea 5 and 10 Braintree Out in Force

Fifteen Braintree & District Athletic Club members took to the roads around Mersea Island on Sunday for the Annual 5 and 10 mile races organised by the Lions.
The course was a circular lap of 5 miles run twice for the longer distance, starting and finishing at the beach. This meant there were two climbs up from the beach and then up the Causeway Road back into the town.
Included in the Braintree contingent were a number of new runners in the five miler, running in their first ever race.
First one home in the five miles was Ross Boyer in a personal Best of 34m 53s.
He was followed by Stuart Phillips back from injury in 38m 56s.
Helen Francis was first lady home for the club in 40m 00s, closely followed by Michelle Phillips in 40m 13s.
In his first race after a long lay off Joe McEwan completed the course in 42m 38s.
Dorinda Fribbens ran a great PB in 45m 48s.
She was followed by five ladies who were running in their first ever road races.
Rhona Firth finished in 46m 35s, followed by Stef Martin Halls 47m 03, Lesley Gardner 47m 11s, Elaine Roberts 50m 42s and Annette Hall 54m 11s.
This new crop of lady runners is a great example to anyone of any standard who wants to take up the sport.
Many of them are now moving on to longer distances.In the 10 mile event, Simon Mennell 70m 06s was first Braintree runners.
Paul Miller smashed his PB by nine minutes to finish in 75m 36s.
He was followed by Mark Fribbens 76m 42s and Trevor Sibley 81m 51s.
