20/03/2011

Meanwhile on Sunday 3000 runners took part in the Annual Equity Brentwood Half Marathon, organised by Brentwood a Becket Rotary Club.

This event is superbly organised, providing the runners with a fast undulating rural course, and the warm spring like temperatures made this a fine race for all the competitors.

Great PBs were seen by three of the runners.

Lee Cousins finished in 1h 31m 17s, knocking over two minutes off his previous best.

Lee Gardham ran a fine race to finish in 1h 34m 33s, a pb by 4 minutes

Ray Sharman knocked over 9 minutes off his best, finishing in 1h 44 10s.

Also representing Braintree with great runs were, Helen Francis 1h 54m 45s, Joe McEwan 1h 54m 45s, Susan Sharman 2h 1m 18s and Sandra Green 2h 7m 34s.

On Sunday 13th Simon Mennell and Mark Fribbens went to Seaton in Devon to run in the Grizzly 20, a 20 mile race with over 1600 competitors.

The race carries a graphic nickname "The Valley of the Bogs".

Times were 3h 49m for Mennell (480th) and 4h 40m for Fribbens (1356th).

Course was a mixture of shingle, 4 bogs, the last of which was waist deep.

Twice the competitors had to make their way up a cliff face.

Apart from that the course was just generally tough and very hilly, attracting those tough athletes who like a good challenge.
