While a number of the club's athletes were otherwise engaged in regional Track and Field finals, Braintree & District Athletic's road runners were also out in force for three races.

On a cool and calm Sunday morning, 16 Braintree runners took part in the 20th running of the annual Great Bardfield 10k, a tough race on rural road and farm track.

Lee Cousins was first in for the club in 43m 15s followed by Ross Boyer in 43m 43s.

Performance of the day came from 66 year old David Reaves who did an amazing 43m 51s in his first ever road race.

Lindsay Rolerkite was first lady in for the club in 47m 38s.

Next came Kevin Bearman whose time of 47m 52s was a PB by over 3 minutes, and Barry Mitchell (48m 12s).

Also in her first race over the distance, 15 year old Anna Eden completed the course in 49m 11s.

Sam Bearman also ran a PB of 51m 13s, followed by Joe McEwan in 52m 27s with Georgie Hazell 56m 05s who headed her husband John by 3 seconds.

Other great times came from Angela Taylor, 56m 22s, Sue Sharman, 57m 17s, Rhona Firth, 57m 31s, Leslie Gardner, 58m 15s and Annette Hall, 67m49s.

Four Braintree runners turned out for the inaugural 10km Takeley run on Sunday.

This beautiful course was 90% off road taking in much of the latter part of the Flitch Way and skirting around the edge of Hatfield Forest.

Conditions were good throughout although the surface was more energy sapping than road and runners had to be mindful of its uneven nature and the potential for holes and ruts.

Andy Smith was first home for Braintree in a time of 44m 31s followed by Stuart Phillips in 48m 27s.

Michelle Phillips finished in a PB of 49m 44s, followed by Tim Gould who was injured on course and still managed a fine time of 61m.

Representing Braintree in the children's 1 mile fun run were Lauren Phillips and Simon Smith.

Across the water in Ireland, Colm Scolard ran in his hometown Dublin Half Marathon on Saturday.

With just over 8,000 entrants the race got off to a fine start in the lovely setting of the Phoenix Park.

Rain started to fall as most of the runners were passing the five mile mark, but it didn't seem to affect the pace.

Despite interrupted preparation for the event, Colm managed a respectable time of 1h 50m, which will provide a great base for the winter season.
