Three Forts, Right Royal Trail, Great Western Run, Boxing Day 5
02/05/2011
Braintree & District Athletic Club endurance runners had a busy bank Holiday weekend.
On 29th April Royal Wedding Day, Dorinda and Mark Fribbens celebrated their wedding anniversary by doing the Right Royal Trail Race.
They chose to do the 10 mile distance, which started at the St Annes Castle Pub in Great Leighs.
The route followed part of the Essex Way, and despite getting lost on one occasion, Dorinda and Mark finished the course in 1hr 47mins.
Mark Jackson and Lee Cousins completed the 3 Forts Challenge on the 1st May. The distance of 27.2 miles was a mile longer than the standard marathon distance so it could encompass three Iron Age forts of the South Downs including the infamous Devils Dyke.
Altogether there was a total of 3450 feet of climbing, the equivalent of running up 12% of Mount Everest.
Needless to say it was tough, all off road and all ascending or descending.
Lee Cousins completed the course in 4hrs 54 mins and Mark Jackson in 5hrs 2mins.
Both enjoyed it immensely, particularly the spectacular scenery.
Meanwhile, Raoul Grantham headed west to run in the Great West Half Marathon in Exeter.
Despite the very long hills, Raoul achieved a fine PB of 2 hours 18 seconds.
The rescheduled Witham Boxing Day 5 Mile race took place on Monday in much more clement conditions, with a light wind and sunshine replacing the icy conditions of Christmas.
The club had sixteen runners out who all produced some great times.
