Three Braintree and District AC athletes were in action on Monday joining over 1100 other runners for the annual Hatfield Broad Oak 10k. The warm sunny weather was very welcome following two years of heavy rain at this event. This race forms the highlight of the Hatfield Broad Oak festival, attracting a good quality field. The scenic undulating two lap course around the village makes this one of the highlights of the local race calendar. Lee Gardham knocked over 6 minutes off his PB, finishing one second ahead of Trevor Sibley (PB by over a minute) in 47m 53s.
Victoria Cole came down a distance following her moonlight
marathon a week earlier, finishing the course in a PB of 55m 17s.
Halsetad Ultra Baddow 10 Moonlight Walk
Braintree and District Athletic Club had several runners racing on the roads in the last week. In the inaugural Halstead Ultra Marathon, Simon Mennell completed the 30 mile race in 4 hours 9m 28s. This was a fantastic time for veteran Mennell, on a gruelling hilly course which earned him a commendable eighth place out of a field of 33 finishers. Another Braintree Runner was in action over a long distance in the Playtex London Moonwalk around the streets of London late on Saturday night. This 26.2 mile event attracts thousands of participants, raising millions for breast cancer charities. The theme of this years event was Strictly Walking and Braintree's Victoria Cole did incredibly well to complete the course in 7 hours 22m. On Sunday, 6 Braintree runners took part in the Great Baddow 10 mile road race. Mark Fribbens was first in for the club in a personal best of 74 minutes. He was followed by Trevor Sibley in 77 minutes (PB). Lindsay Rolerkite prepared well for the Southend Half Marathon next month with a PB of 79 minutes, while Helen Potter also achieved a best time of 94m.
In their first ever road race, Paula Evans and Sarah
Williams benefited from their hard training, completing the course
in 1h 44m and 1h 45m respectively.
Braintree & District Athletes in London Marathon
Braintree and District Athletic Club had 7 runners in this year's London Marathon in April. The hot weather made this one of the hardest Londons in recent years as the change in temperature added a considerable challenge to the 26.2 mile route. Running in his second marathon, Lee Cousins completed the course in 4 hours and 30 seconds. Next in was Mark Fribbens, who did remarkably well in the heat to finish in 4hours 17 minutes. Lee Gardham knocked an amazing 21 minutes off his marathon best, finishing in 4hr 21m. He was followed by Paul Miller, who ran a great race in 4h 50m. First lady in for the club was Wendy Smalley, in 5 hours and 52 seconds.
Vicky Hadden and David Gethin ran the course
together in their first Marathons, finishing in 5h 59m. Vicky slowed down at
twenty miles with a knee injury, but completed the course as she and David were
raising over two and a half thousand pounds for Help The Hospices.
